The Japanese Countryside

Mt. Aso. Realizing we had an extra day, it was decided to stay three nights. This was a welcomed change of pace as Aso was a region of 40 thousand vs. the million plus cities we had been in.

Aso brought outdoor activities, day one we visited the volcano of Mt. Aso and continued a loop hike that recommend a hitch hike from the end car park back to the train station. Obliged to be locals, I shook a little thigh, Erin and I soon had the first ride down the mountain.

Later to meet up with Sarah and Magnus back at the hostel. Another great way to meet locals as the lady driver and her mother were able to share a story of travel to Vancouver and Montana State. And we were granted the title of "true tourists" for our visit to the hamlet area of Aso.

Day two brought on a bike tour of the valley. We were able to experience the small town life of the region. Much like a rural farming area in Alberta. The fall harvest of rice was coming in. To my amazement this was on quite a small scale compared to western standards, taken in by open to combines a half acre at a time.

We found cattle grazing and silage and hay being put up the same as you would find in the foothills of the Rockies. The day would end with a trip past the local school baseball practice. What a reminder of home.
